The Blue Jays asked the Mets for top outfield prospect Kirk Nieuwenhuis plus another prospect in exchange for reliever Scott Downs. The Mets don't want to give up Nieuwenhuis, a 22-year-old outfielder at Double-A who is batting .290 with 16 home runs and 58 RBIs. Toronto wanted top catching prospect Jesus Montero from the Yankees, and either of two prospects -- pitcher Casey Kelly or shortstop Jose Iglesias -- from the Red Sox.

Orioles will hire Showalter as manager

Buck Showalter will be hired as manager of the Orioles, sources confirm. ESPN.com first reported that Showalter, currently an ESPN analyst, was going to be hired by Baltimore. Orioles owner Peter Angelos wanted either Showalter or Rick Dempsey. Some believe Andy MacPhail, the team's president of baseball operations, liked former Indians manager Eric Wedge, too.
